Schools’ census data on G&T populations will be collected from both primary and secondary schools along with institutional data (including progress against IQS) and matched against all other data in the National Pupil Database (ie pupils’ attainment data and cognitive ability tests).
What is not yet clear is how the DfES will get around data protection legislation! Schools census data on secondary students will still establish whether they will be eligible for NAGTY membership.
The purpose of the national register is, say, the GTEU, to:
- improve identification of G&T learners
- help LAs, regional partnerships and others target learning opportunities
- support tracking of learners’ progress
- provide data to inform national, regional and local intervention
- potentially, provide data to higher education institutions to inform widening participation strategies – but only if it can be shown that universities want this type of information.
