Learning to Learn

I am moving on from my fete debacle and trying to focus on something positive.

Does anyone out there know anything about Learning to Learn? In particular, how it might be used/introduced in an infant or primary school? I have volunteered (why do I always do this?) to look into it and am not really sure where to start.

So far, I understand that it is about teaching children how to learn rather than just giving them information - I guess that it takes the emphasis off the teacher standing at the class and instructing. But, whilst I can see how I would have applied it in my classes as a secondary school teacher, I am not sure how it applies to younger children.

Do schools have packages that they teach, or is it something that teachers introduce as they are teaching? Do schools formalise it, or is it left to the individual teacher?

I would love to hear of any other schools experiences of this.

Many thanks

Campaign for learning

Many thanks. Will have a browse through the website. It is certainly an interesting topic. I guess that times have changed so much that children need a whole bunch of different skills nowadays to way back when I was at school!

The Campaign for Learning

The Campaign for Learning has been researching learning to learn in both primary and secondary schools for 8 years. You might like to visit our website for more information, http://www.campaign-for-learning.org.uk/cfl/learninginschools/projects/learningtolearn/index.asp

You will find research reports, but also case studies written by the teacher themselves which might give you some ideas about how you might go about implementing L2L.

learning to learn

Thank you HS and jlee. I have visited the link to this and it looks really interesting. I particularly like the fact that it refers to learning away from school - it seems to me that children these days have to be able to cope with so much more these days than just the academic subjects I was taught as a child!

Learning to learn / Thinking Through School

HS is actually referring to one of our own publications - the award-winning Thinking Through School package.

Find out more:
Thinking Through School's author Ann De A’Echevarria talks about the Thinking Through School approach to learning-focused innovation. She describes the model and, using examples, explores successful implementation in schools and how the impact can be seen to be more than school-wide

Learning to learn

We use a package with year seven students at the secondary school where I teach.
It is in the form of a narrative that follows the story of an A.I and a young girl,(Elfi and Jaz). There are activities attached to each chapter of the story which we have incorportated into lesson plans. I do believe there is another package that can be purchased, but not really sure what's called.
