Exploring pupil voice in primary schools

On 25 March an article appeared in The Independent newspaper under the headline ‘Pupil power: the children who chose their own head'. The article concerned the involvement of primary age pupils in the interview process leading to the appointment of a new headteacher at their school. This practice, which is becoming increasingly common, highlights the growing involvement of pupils in strategic developments within their school.

Making connections across the curriculum

Many of you will be intrigued as I am by children's questions. Questions are a sign of thinking - a very healthy sign, as they suggest that connections are being made between previously unconnected items of knowledge. Some of my very recent favourites from school and family sources are: Why do we have a skeleton? What causes global warming? When does your memory start? Why was Tutankhamun afraid of dying?

Keeping control when faced with challenging behaviour

Faced with a confrontation, it is widely accepted that we have an inbuilt, automatic response mechanism – the old ‘fight or flight’ scenario. Whether the confrontation is real or perceived, the response system is there to protect us. However, for adults working with pupils in an educational setting, whether it be the classroom, the dining room or an outside space, an uncontrolled fight or flight response is unlikely to be appropriate!

As emotionally literate adults we should be able to manage our feelings and emotions, but how have we learnt these skills? Some fans, who had spent a lot of money - wanted someone to say sorry to them – and striker Wayne Rooney did just that. He didn’t like being booed after the Algeria game and said so to the TV cameras. But later on he did issue an apology: ‘I said things in the heat of the moment out of frustration at our performance and the result... I apologise for any offence caused by my actions.’ (1)

This issue looks at the problems caused by pupils who are constantly off-task, but not overtly disruptive: how, if not proactively addressed, their behaviour can have a negative effect on peers, be the source of constant frustration for you, and if not dealt with can quickly disengage the pupil from the learning process.

Secondary Assembly: ‘Not Angles, but angels’

It concludes with the tale of Pope Gregory’s punning comment about the slave boys from Britain, as recorded by Bede. Pupils are encouraged to consider ways in which the insights revealed in these puns may be applied to our own times. The theme coincides with the commemoration day of the Venerable Bede and St Augustine of Canterbury (May 26th and 27th).
Dealing with the ‘significant minority’ of poorly-behaved students

To try to get a clear perspective of the problem affecting the significant minority, it is easier to think in terms of teaching groups rather than the school population as a whole. Within a typical class group of approximately 25-30 students, individuals tend to fit into the following categories:

Like most couples they share an interest. For Kim and Choi the shared interest was the Second Life-style game Prius, which they regularly played at their local internet cafe. Their carefully chosen avatars lived out an idealised life onscreen. The perfect couple.

How to improve behaviour during lunch break

Much time and effort is spent by schools on providing appropriate space, equipment and supervision for students at lunchtime. Timetables may be altered to accommodate a longer morning session, short lunch breaks and varied afternoon sessions. In spite of this, many students find it difficult to cope with the change from the structure of the classroom to the greater freedom, social interaction and changed supervision of the lunch break.

Child protection training: new staff and support staff

The matter of child protection training during staff induction can be easy to overlook. The recruitment process can be time-consuming and it is easy for senior leadership members to hand over the new recruit to another member of staff without following up the next stage in their appointment. These difficulties can be even more acute with supply staff. The pressures of the school day can leave them isolated and without the most basic guidance they need.

In spite of increasingly clear rules, boundaries and expectations regarding their use, phones and MP3 players remain among the most popular and prized of all personal possessions and students continually bring them into, and try to use them in, school. School and classroom rules range from a complete ban while on the premises to guidance asking that they are switched off, left at the office or handed in when entering the classroom.

Primary Assembly: He felt he might be needed

The recent ceremony held to honour the memory of Reginald Earnshaw, who at 14 and 152 days was the youngest serving casualty of World War Two, reminds us that in fact over 500 boys of sixteen or under died serving in the Merchant Navy in that war. We pay tribute to them here, and tell the story of Boy First Class John Travers ('Jack') Cornwell, who, at sixteen and a half, gave his life at the Battle of Jutland in 1916 in heroic circumstances, and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. We remember also the plight of child soldiers in today’s global conflicts.

You’ve got to show me the proof before I’ll change my mind.

Reader 2: I’ve got to suspend my judgement about that.
Secondary Assembly: Groundhog Day

Summary

This assembly is timed to be presented on or near February 2nd, also known as ‘Groundhog Day’, which is held annually in the United States and Canada. It discusses the meaning of this strangely labelled tradition and asks how it reflects our attitudes to life.

Resources

A leader and a reader.

Perhaps a brief extract from the song Groundhog Days by the Manic Street Preachers?

Engagement

Pupil evaluation and feedback
School councils and pupil voice have become established and effective aspects of pupils’ ability to contribute their views to school development plans.
Secondary Assembly: When your chewing gum’s lost its flavour

Engagement

Leader: Didn’t the area where we live look different under all that snow over Christmas and the New Year? Each time there was a fresh fall it covered everything in pure white. Every ugly building and piece of wasteland, probably even the town waste disposal site, looked like a scene from an Alpine holiday promotion. There it lay, deep and crisp and even as it says in the Christmas carol. As far as the eye could see there was an unending, even covering of white. It was perfection.

Secondary Assembly: Speaking out against injustice

This assembly challenges listeners to consider possibly scenarios where they should speak out, even if the cost of doing so seems high. It links to the story of a nurse who had been struck off the nursing register for secretly filming what she saw as failures in patient treatments on an NHS ward. The nurse has since won a national award for nursing.

Resources

8 Readers and one Leader

Stories at:

Engagement

Leader: Walls can be useful.

Walls can give support. There are walls holding up the roof above our heads in this hall. Without those walls the roof wouldn’t stay up.

Walls can be a background for display. On the corridor walls of this school [mention other areas if appropriate] we have displays of artwork, photographs and information posters.
Secondary Assembly: You’re worth it

Engagement

Leader: This year the African Award for Good Governance (officially called the Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership) has not been awarded to anyone (1).
