Learning and Teaching Update

Author: Edited by Dr David Leat & Dr Kate Wall

Many schools now have teaching and learning coordinators and teaching and learning groups who are tasked with keeping ahead of developments and to facilitate innovation, enquiry and evaluation into teaching and learning across the school. If you’re one of the many professionals faced with this task, you will be interested in Learning & Teaching Update, edited by Dr David Leat and Dr Kate Wall.

It is a practical and accessible work tool, which draws on the latest professional research, and best practice in schools, to help you improve your school's teaching and learning.

Learning & Teaching Update is a 12-page newsletter aimed at keeping schools in touch with developing teaching and learning practice. It provides an evidence- and school-based approach to teaching and learning, and it shares innovations within policy and practice of schools across the UK.

Published 10 times a year, each issue will cover important topics such as learning to learn, learning styles, pupils as researchers, personalised learning and thinking skills.

About the Editors

Dr David Leat is a reader in Curriculum Innovation at Newcastle University. His main interest has long been thinking skills and his edited series, which started with ‘Thinking Through Geography’ and focuses on generic teaching strategies, has been very influential with classroom teachers. Another major interest is coaching, as it is so important in bringing about change in classroom teaching. David spent three years working in the Secondary Strategy and during that time wrote both the coaching modules and developed the ‘Leading in Learning’ whole-school initiative.

Dr Kate Wall has worked in education research for the past six years. During this time she has developed an interest in the area of pupil views, in particular, exploring how pupil thinking about learning and teaching can be heard. She is the project manager for the Campaign for Learning’s Learning to Learn Phase 3 Evaluation involving 36 schools nationwide and has extensive experience in supporting teachers in researching teaching and learning within their own classroom or context and connecting their findings to other research.
