Steps to develop confidence in speaking

Written by Sue Soan

This resource contains steps to develop pupils' confidence in speaking, especially those pupils that have mutism.

Key characteristics of selective mutism may include:

  • fearing people, especially unknown adults
  • speaking at home with family and close relatives
  • being overwhelmingly shy
  • finding eye-contact uncomfortable
  • being expressionless and even rigid most of the time
  • remaining detached and on the edge of things
  • having undiagnosed, intermittent or ongoing hearing problems
  • feeling unable to speak in social situations outside the home.
