It was a cold December day. Nearly Christmas. Term had ended and all that was left for this school after a difficult term was their annual INSET, and much more importantly, the annual staff Christmas party.

A hotel on Manchester's ring road was the venue - no one would need to drive home. Hangovers could be slept off as the next day's training session had been cancelled.

What is a Healthy School?

A healthy school is one that is successful in helping pupils to do their best and build on their achievements. It is committed to ongoing improvement and development. Such a school will work in partnership with the local community to create an ethos of shared learning and development.

Student voice at Whalley Range High School

Yes, we had a school council. But was it really representative of the whole school student voice? Councillors were keen elected volunteers, but our canvassing of all our students concerns through them and our feedback mechanisms were certainly not as rigorous as they could be. How real was their power and the say they had, anyway?

Yes, we did surveys, interviews, questionnaires and talked to students about different things at different times but all in a rather ad hoc way. So time for a rethink.

Citizenship INSET at Eaton Bank School

The session had support from Cheshire Development Education Centre and the LEA and was organised by the Head of Citizenship at Eaton Bank.

The focus was on the global dimension in citizenship education, and to confirm all-staff support for a mission statement on Global Citizenship. The programme was influenced by a successful INSET held at another project school, Hartford High, in 2003.

Multi-cultural Arts Day at Congleton High School

The day involved an experience of the art and music of a different culture. It links with the citizenship scheme of work in which we look at and celebrate diversity. This activity helped to address both the development of citizenship in the whole school development plan and to further embed the awareness of global citizenship within our school community.

Congleton is a small rural Cheshire town that has very little cultural diversity and therefore we felt that it was a particularly enriching experience for our students.

As part of the Developing Citizenship Project, Diss High School ran a One World Week in February 2004. Developing Citizenship was part of the School Development Plan 2003-04 so this event had full backing.

India Day at Flegg High School

Flegg High School is a rural high school (12-16 years) in East Norfolk. It is quite isolated and students come from Martham itself or are bussed in form small villages nearby. There has been a will to take on new initiatives at Flegg with the support of Head, Senior Management and staff.

The decision to be involved in the Developing Citizenship project was not a difficult one.

We decided to try to promote the Global Citizenship idea through a joint project with our feeder middle schools. In the event only three schools took part. We had a total of about 80 students at the final event. All of them had contributed in some way. Students were either Year 8 or 9.

Global curriculum development at Broadoak High School

Involvement in the Developing Citizenship Project has had a very positive impact on citizenship provision at Broadoak High School. The project has enabled the school to radically alter curriculum provision at Key Stage 3, providing resources and units of work.

We have been able to introduce a ‘Global Day’ for Key Stage 4 students, which promotes citizenship as a subject and gets students involved in tackling thorny issues surrounding debt, international trade and sustainability.
