In its evidence to the SEN inquiry, the charity I CAN calls for a three-pronged strategic programme to actively support children’s speech and language development, comprising:
A national model to be developed and implemented across all schools and education settings in the UK to actively support children’s speech and language development and successfully include those with a communication disability.
- a national strategy to be developed to ensure that all families have access to appropriate and timely information and advice on supporting children’s communication development and accessing help for those with disabilities;
- a radical review of the statementing process in order to address the postcode lottery of provision, provide timely and appropriate services to meet children’s needs and secure equality of opportunity.
