CPD magazine for teachers – creative ideas on teaching, learning, managing teams + teaching books – Teaching Expertise

My first post was teaching Geography and PE in a community school in South Somerset where I had a fantastic few years of being involved in endless school trips, exchanges and outdoor education. In 1991 I took part in a three-week study tour of Japan, having won a competition in the TES. I then became Head of Geography in a Wiltshire school for five years, followed by Head of Humanities at Hayesfield School Technology College in Bath. Throughout my teaching career I have been heavily involved in mentoring NTs and NQTs and I thoroughly enjoyed a recent 6-month secondment to the University of Bath where I was the PGCE subject didactics tutor for Geography. There is so much to discover about innovative approaches to helping children learn. One of the frustrating things about being a teacher is the lack of time and money for investigating these methods further, hence ‘Teaching Expertise’.
