“Schools should consider new approaches to assessment and evaluate their appropriateness for their school” Ofsted, PE in Schools 2005/08 – Working towards 2012 and beyond
Ofsted recognised the significant contribution of the PESSCL strategy in supporting improvements in PE & school sports over the past three years. “The quality of teaching was good or outstanding in two thirds of secondary schools, though more variable in primary schools”.However, Ofsted was clear that the lack of a common assessment strategy led to inconsistencies in judging pupils’ standards and achievements.
It wasn’t only assessment that Ofsted raised as a concern. Motivating hard to reach groups through non-traditional activities and improving continuity of learning at transition were also marked out as areas requiring new policy, new practice and more attention.
