“Silver Award Winner 2008, The Geographical Association”

This award-winning illustrated book by Charles Rawding shows how approaches to the study of landscape — in its broadest sense — can reaffirm the relevance of geography to pupils' everyday lives

Charles Rawding offers a narrative that will provide a stimulating discussion of current developments in geography while also providing an effective framework for developing a dynamic approach to the delivery of geography in the classroom.

Reading Our Landscapes has a specific focus on understanding place and space through an investigation of changing physical and human processes. The activities within the book provide a range of frameworks for geographical enquiry and out of class learning and a wide range of varied resources for interpreting landscape and changing geographies.

With a particular focus on how landscapes change, this unique book will enable you to:

  • Provide your students with a conceptual framework for interpreting landscapes

  • Provide practical resources to assist your students to achieve a deeper understanding of the world around them

  • Create a philosophical framework for the study of geography that focuses on processes and emphasises change

  • Encourage your students to think about thinking and be more self-reflective in order to develop higher-level thinking skills

  • Encourage your students to relate what they see around them to the ideas discussed in the book

  • Reinforce the dynamism and relevance of landscapes and of geography as a subject

The book is divided into ten parts with each section incorporating case study material and activities designed to support the themes being discussed. The teaching resources have been included in electronic form on an accompanying CD-Rom. Information is provided in the text indicating where electronic materials are available. Points for further enquiry are included, which provide a starting point for enrichment and extension.
