School doctor | Teaching Expertise

July 1, 2008 //  by Admin

Tags: A to Z of Special Needs

The work of the school doctor is closely related to the community paediatrician’s role, except that in some areas the school doctor is exclusively employed to visit schools and assess children’s needs.

They can make recommendations, assess specific conditions and review individual cases over time. Children will usually be referred to the school doctor through the educational psychologist or the school nurse.

The special needs caseworker may also ask the school doctor to assess the child as part of the statutory assessment process, towards the provision of a statement of special educational needs.
