10 Free and Affordable 4th Grade Reading Fluency Passages

To improve your 4th grader’s reading fluency, it is essential that they practice with fluency passages. By the time students reach the 4th grade, they should read seamlessly with expression, and their oral reading should flow like a conversation. By the end of 4th grade, the average reading fluency rates for students are correctly reading at least 118 words per minute.

Research by the National Assessment of Educational Progress shows a correlation between reading fluency and reading comprehension. Therefore, use the following 10 reading passages suggestions to help and challenge your students to become fluent, strong, and successful readers.

1. Fluency Intervention for All Seasons

This inexpensive reading resource includes 35 fluency passages that provide practice in poetry, fictional text, and informational text. Each printable fluency passage includes 2-3 extension activities and comprehension questions that are aligned with the Common Core standards. Use one passage per week for the entire school year.
