24 Patriot Day Elementary Activities

9/11 can be a challenging and sensitive subject to tackle, but when addressed with thoughtfulness and care, it can be a rich source of learning about world history, empathy, community service, and the sacrifices of heroic first responders.

This collection of bestselling fiction and non-fiction books, engaging reading and writing activities,  inventive arts and crafts activities, as well as student-centered videos, presentations, and virtual tours, are sure to give your students a solid grasp of the historical significance of this important day.

1. Read and Discuss a Non-Fiction Book

This excellent book recounts the true story tale of two girls who were delivering boxes of over 2400 roses by plane on 9/11 but never made it to their destination. It makes for a wonderful discussion starter about the importance of human connection in coping with terrible tragedies.

2. Watch a Brainpop Video with Video Guide

In this educational, animated Brainpop video, the dynamic duo, Tim and Moby recount the timeline of the 9-11 tragedy and explore terrorism and its underlying causes. It ends on an affirmative note by celebrating the incredible stories of courage of everyday heroes who rose to the occasion to support their fellow countrymen. The accompanying video guide features questions sure to generate rich discussion as well as quizzes, vocabulary flashcards, and related reading.

Fireboat by Maira Kalman has become a classic recount of the tragic events of September 11th. Kalman explains what happened with great sensitivity and in a way, children can understand. This read-aloud can be combined with an activity on the qualities of a hero for students to reflect on how they can contribute to their country as caring citizens.

19. Complete a 9/11 Community Service Project

One way to commemorate  9/11 is through service in honor of the heroes who risked their lives to help others. Students can choose from many ideas including writing positive messages with chalk on the sidewalk, preparing a disaster relief kit, and making thank you cards for first responders.

20. Interview Someone Who Remembers

By interviewing someone, students will become familiar with the process of using oral accounts to learn about the history and be given an opportunity to reflect on their own views of 9/11.
