Number 9 Activities For Preschool: Ideas, Videos, And Resources

Children love to learn. Counting is lots of fun. It is essential that children associate numbers with common things like a pair of mittens are two, or a six-pack of juice drinks is a half dozen. There are so many ways to teach numbers and this time we are going to put a theme to number 9 to expand our knowledge.

1.  Learning numbers fun with planet art projects

We all learned the names of the planets in order and some people know a lot of facts about our solar system. There are actually only 8 planets and the 9th one Pluto is a dwarf planet. Give children the printable so they can cut, color, and, stick the 8 planets +1.

2. Cloud 9 is a learning experience

Kids will be on "Cloud 9" with these fun math games. Draw 4 Clouds onto the card paper in the shape of the number 9 and have them roll a die and depending on the number they roll from1-6, that is the amount they can stick.  So if they roll a 4, they can put one cotton ball in each or all four in one. Fun counting activity.

3.  Cats have 9 lives

Cats are funny creatures, they jump and fall sometimes. They get injured but they always seem to bounce right back. Children love small furry friends and why not have a laugh with cats and this fun number activity?

4. Play-dough 9

Get out the play-dough counting mats and make a huge nine out of play-dough and then count out nine pieces of dough to put on the mat. Lots of fun and enhances math skills. Great for use of fine motor practice and it is a fun learning activity. You can also make adorable paper ladybugs and stick them on 9 play-dough dots!

5.  Letter recognition in September

September is the ninth month of the year. So children can practice the 9 with some calendar work and months of the year. And the word Sep Tem Ber has 9 letters. Have the children count the letters in the word.

6.  The colorful green caterpillar

This is such a cute construction paper craft and helps with gross and fine motor skills. Children can trace 9 circles for the body of their caterpillar and cut them out. Then they can put your caterpillar together and number each part of its body. Fun math craft!

7.  Falling leaves

Take the children outside for a walk. looking for brown leaves that have fallen. Use a piece of paper with the number 9 on it and have the toddlers use a glue stick to fill in the picture. At the top, you can label 9 brown leaves in September.

8. Groovy Buttons

Use colorful red, yellow and blue buttons for this math activity. Have a big container of buttons and they have to match the amount and the children practice counting 1-9 in this task. Hands-on learning and counting.

9.  An Apple a day keeps the doctor away

There are 9 apple trees in a row and you can use red pom poms to represent apples or use other pom poms by color to represent other fruit. Children turn over the cards 1-9 and place the corresponding numbers of "apples" on the tree. Great for solidifying math concepts.

10.  I spy the number 9

Children love to play the "I spy" game. and with this cute worksheet, children can look for the number 9s hidden in the picture and highlight them. These are great math worksheets, and counting is the foundation of math.

11.  Cookie monster and counting math videos

Cookie Monster loves counting and eating cookies! Help Cookie Monster count how many delicious chocolate chips are on these paper chocolate chip cookies. Children in preschool will love this delicious math activity.  Use real chocolate chips for an extra treat!

12. Sesame Street celebrates the number 9 

Big Bird, Elmo, Cookie Monster, and Friends all come together to celebrate the number 9 in this awesome video. Videos can be fun activities for children and a relaxing period of time for reflection on what they have learned. Many people are not a fan of screen time but this is educational and really teaches foundational concepts.

13.   Red fish, Blue Fish ..How many fish do you see?

This fun activity is using basic math skills and it's a super fun math lesson. Children can create their own fish bowl and decide how many red or blue fish there are. All the fish in the bowl will total the number 9 today. There are some great learning resources here too.

14. Nonagon?

Children practiced drawing triangles when they were learning the number 3 and squares when they learned the number 4. But, they probably have never seen a Nonagon! This 9-sided geometrical shape can be traced and numbered on each side with a different color.

15.  Spoons-Super for child number recognition 

Mix all the decks of cards well and then tell the students how they are going to pass the cards around in small circles looking for the number 9 and trying to collect 2 cards that have the number 9 on them and when they have two 9s  secretly take their plastic spoon away.

16.   Dinosaur Board Game

This is a free printable that kids will love playing with, trying to get their dinosaurs across the rocks. It is a good math game and teaches math concepts, counting, and patience.

17.  Feed the Penguin

This is a cute penguin math game and kids can practice counting. Children have milk bottles that look like penguins and they have a plastic bowl with goldfish crackers in it. Roll the dice, count the dots and feed the penguins the amount of goldfish. Super interactive and hands-on.

18.  Raindrops are falling on my head

This printable is fantastic for counting. Children can count the raindrops and write the number it equals. Since we are practicing the number 9, try to have a few rain clouds that equal 9, and at the bottom, you can have an umbrella with 9 dots to color it.

19. Learn only the number 9

Have the children collect small toys, pencils, crayons anything in the room, and then sit down and count their crayons, pencils, or toys. They can only circle the number 9 on the worksheet. There are lots of follow-up activities too.

21.  Nine-eyed monsters

Monsters are fun to use in education. Children can make these simple paper plate monsters with sticks on bubble eyes. Stick 9 eyes to this monster, color, and decorate your monster with arts and crafts material. It's an easy number craft.

It is never too early to introduce children to digital applications, and harder math concepts especially when they can teach math in an illustrative way. With easy addition, children can watch, participate and learn how to count from 1-9.

23.  Counting to 10 by the age of 2 for educators and parents

We all learn by visualization, trial and error, and memory. But when it comes to math we must reinforce the math concepts again and again. We have to know the difference between rote counting and rational counting. Rote counting is like parrot-learning by memory and rational counting is when they begin to add up the things themselves. Like counting ducks or small toys in a row, not just rattling off numbers they have memorized.

24. 9 scoops of ice cream for a busy toddler

Who can name 9 flavors of ice cream? Kids Can!

Use this printable to give the children 9 scoops of ice cream to cut out and put on a paper cone. If you want to teach them some of the flavors by taste-testing. Delicious and fun activity.

25.  Engine Engine number 9 is the perfect song.

This is a multicultural experience with a fun video and poem or song chant. Interactive learning and a cute video, which is easy to learn. It includes the city of Bombay in the chant, so you might have to pre-teach the children what other places look like.

26.  9 Pick up sticks

Using paper colorful straws, children can learn the game "Pick up sticks" which is a classic counting game. So all you need are 9 colorful straws and a steady hand. If it moves you have to start all over.

27.  Dot to dot number 9

Connecting the dots is always a great way to reinforce fine motor skills and patience. Find dot to dots or make them online with 9 dots to help preschoolers learn how to count and connect the dots for a surprise picture.

28.  Reading time

Reading time should be a daily activity for preschoolers. At school, at home, and at bedtime. If your child develops good reading skills they will be successful in the future, and this will open doors. Here is a site that has a fun animal counting story and more than 1-10.

29.  Hopscotch Number 9

Children love hopping and jumping and what better way to teach the number 9 is by getting outside on the playground and making hopscotch with 9 squares. Movement is essential, and this is an important experience for preschoolers they will love playing this game and hopping to number 9!
