One of my client schools in Ealing has asked us to recruit an exceptional teacher for September 09′.
This is a school for pupils who have moderate to severe learning difficulties and who are able to benefit from a modified adapted curriculum.
The school uses a variety of strategies and teaching methodologies to improve and develop their pupil’s communication, social and independence skills. These include the use of symbols and signing, structured teaching, sensory integration and behaviour management.
The school has excellent facilities as well as a Speech and language therapists based at the school for three days each week, an Occupational therapist based at the school two days a week.
The school was purpose built and opened in 1972, extended in 2002 and has modern facilities. The school has specialist rooms for music, science, occupation and speech and language therapy and there is a kitchen area for cooking and washing activities. There is a medical room, changing room, a bathroom, and laundry and drying facilities. There is only one entrance to the school and access to the main school area is restricted by security coded locked main doors.
Outside there are three hard surface play areas with a variety of large equipment including climbing frames, an adventure trail and slides. There is a separate play area for the younger children. There is a large grass playing field including a football pitch and a fenced all weather football court. There is also a garden and a pond that are used to help the children to develop an interest in nature and a conservation area where wildlife can flourish undisturbed.
At the school the main subjects – referred to as ‘core subjects are Literacy, Numeracy and PSHE. Science is also a main subject. Literacy and Numeracy are taught everyday and Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) is taught both as a subject and throughout the week.
My clients school has a major focus on social, life and independent skills.
In addition to these subjects, the school must make provision for Religious Education (RE). All pupils take part in assemblies which reflect the multi faith society in which they live.
The pupils learning is carefully planned to meet the needs of all of their children with learning difficulties.
Pupils will be taught the National Curriculum with appropriate modifications according to each individual child’s abilities. Each class will have between 6 and 8 children taught by a teacher, assisted by either a Nursery Nurse of a Special Support Assistant.
Each child has an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and staff choose their methods to suit the learning needs of the individual child. Some of the approaches the school uses are:
* Small steps * Visual Strategies inc TEACCH * Group Work * Turn Taking * Individual Work * Paired Work * Behaviour Management Programmes * Social Stories * Circle Time * PECs
You as a candidate should have previous experience of students with Complex needs and Autistic Spectrum Disorder and experience of T.E.A.C.C.H, PEC’s and Makaton would be an advantage, however training will given to the right candidate.
This is an excellent opportunity if you are enthusiastic, empathetic and ambitious. You must also be able to differentiate, inspire and bring fresh ideas to the school!
All applicants must be a qualified teacher with QTS to apply!
